Best Drones for under $50 list:-
1) JJRC H31
Control range: 70-80 meters
Flight time: 6-8 minutes
Charging time: 60 Minutes
Out of all the other Drones reviewed on this page, JJRC H31 is the only waterproof drone in this list. Although, JJRC is marketing this drone as fully waterproof but in our test we found their claim is not 100% correct. In our test, we found that it flies easily in the rain without any difficulty (light shower not in heavy rain). In fact, we even landed it on water several times and from there it easily took off without any problem (there are few holes in the corner that allows the water to flow out). But the problem started when we fully immersed it into water. JJRC claim that it can stand being soaked up to 50m underwater but it is not always true. In our test, we found that water somehow reached to the internal circuit and caused the drone to malfunction.
Being a review unit manufacturer replaced that drone with other JJRC H31. Second time, we again tried that and this time it flew away without any problem. We are not fully sure if there was some manufacturing defect or any other problem with the first drone. In our opinion, a little bit of rain or water isn’t going to ruin the drone but we wouldn’t suggest you to fully immerse it into water.
In addition to being fully waterproof, JJRC H31 also comes with advanced features like Headless mode, one key return, and 3D aerobatic flight mode that makes flying intuitive, easy and safe. Considering the fact this is a dirt cheap drone (only $30*) we were very impressed by the durability of the device. While testing for a week, we crashed it for at least 30 times and each time it surprisingly survived our crash test.
After taking a sneak peek at its features, let’s talk about specifications. So, far as operating range goes, JJRCH31 was able to travel around 70-75m away from its transmitter which is outstanding considering its cheap price for about $30. You can easily get around 6 to 8 minutes of flight time on a single charge with this drone. Charging takes up to an hour but the good thing is batteries are removable so it will be a good option to have a charged separate batteries (affiliate link) before flying your drone.
- Bonus sunglasses
- Highly Durable
- No camera
- No Altitude hold
- Led lights are not bright enough
2) HS170 PREDATOR
Control range: 50 meters
Flight time: 6-8 minutes
Charge Time: 30 Minutes
Battery: 350 mAh
The manufacturer of this quadcopter is Holy Stone. They are known for making great Racing drone and FPV drones such as HS100, HS400, and HS150. Even with this small HS170 predator, the company doesn’t disappoint us. HS170 predator is a stylish and unique quadcopter that offers tons of advanced features like 3D Flips, 3 Speed Modes, Altitude Hold and Return to home mode for just around 30 dollars. It is colored in bright cobalt blue where two propellers are white and other two are black which gives it a premium look.
6-axis gyro helps in stabilizing the drone while flying and believe me it really works great. In addition to that HS170 also comes with a headless mode, which makes flight experience smoother and more fun. Want to know what is the headless mode? Click here.
In terms of flight performance, this HS170 is very fast and agile. It comes with 3-speed mode. I would recommend using the basic/slow mode, indoor while faster mode outdoor. It is an RTF (Ready to Fly) drone, where you just have to power the controller (it requires 6AA batteries which is not included in the package) and attach the fully charged battery to the drone then calibrate it before flying. The controller response rate is very fast which is very rare to see in toy grade drones. To make the device robust, the manufacturer has made the landing feet springy that provides the extra cushion during accidental landings. In addition to that, they have added a curved propeller guard to it which minimizes the impact further.
Talking about flight time, it can stay in air for roughly around 6 to 8 minutes depending on the flying conditions with a control range up to 50m which in our opinion is a bit low. In addition to controlling range, another thing which we didn’t like was the small wire that connects the drone to its battery that keeps hanging out all the time. If we do not pay attention wire could bend upwards and catch on a blade. The best solution would be to apply a cello tape to it.
In my opinion, it is a highly durable quadcopter with a powerful motor and beautiful design. More than 2500 positive customer reviews on Amazon also speaks about the quality of this drone.
- Durable & Stable
- Great for both indoors and outdoors
- Can perform stunts
- Fast response to controller
- Excellent customer service
- No camera
- Wire hanging out
- Short range (50m)
3) Hubsan X4 (H107C)
Control range: 90-100 meters
Flight time: 6-7 minutes
Charge Time: 30 Minutes
Battery: 380 mAh
Hubsan X4 has a special place in my heart because it was the first drone I bought for myself. It was from my first salary from a corporate job that I didn’t like at all. Later I left that job (more on that in my blog) but the drone is still with me. Because it was my first drone, I crashed this drone many times while flying and learning different tricks with it but it withstood everything. Believe me, you can hardly find such a rough and tough drone for this price.
In terms of flight performance, It comes with two modes basic and pro. It flies normally in basic mode but the real fun is in pro mode. It is fast, it is incredibly agile, is responsive, and easily maneuverable in pro mode and this is because of its powerful motor and lightweight body (under 40g). Due to its low mass, it’s best to fly this quadcopter outside only when there is no wind.
Hubsan X4 is powered by 380mAH battery that can easily give a flight time of at least 6 to 7 minutes without any problem. Have in mind that this is an average time, and it strongly depends on how you fly it. The effective range is up to 100m which is most impressive. Other than that, it also comes with a 0.3MP camera which is not very powerful but still can take a decent quality image in a good lighting condition. A good, reliable drone for beginners or kids that will last for a long time.
- Camera (0.3MP)
- Good Control range.
- Cheap Spare parts
- Buy an SD card separately.
- No propeller guard
- Poor instruction manual.
4) Cheerson CX-10
Control range: 20-30 meters
Flight time: 5-7 minutes
Charge Time: 20 Minutes
Battery: 100 mAh
CX-10 from a Chinese manufacturer Cheerson is one of the cheapest and smallest drones available in the market today. Weighing about just under 15g it can easily fit in the palm of your hand. Nevertheless, don’t be fooled by its price and size this little CX 10 is a very maneuverable quadcopter with a very nice performance to entice a buyer.
The quadcopter features a 6-axis gyro system and has three different speed modes. In advance mode, it can surprise you how fast and agile it is. In terms of design, it is a very basic looking quadcopter with four smaller propellers, not very powerful motor, a charging port and a 100maH battery which is completely encased within quadcopter.
Although we didn’t like the fact that the battery is non-removable which means you can’t replace the batteries between flights. But we think that the manufacturer had a valid reason to do that. They say that because it’s a small quadcopter, the motor gets overheated very quickly. Charging time gives its tiny motor some cooling time.
In terms of flight performance, CX 10 gives around 5-7 minutes of flight time on a full charge which takes around 20 minutes. Pretty impressive considering the size of a quad. There is a downside to its small size also, even a light amount of breeze can blow it off course. Speaking about control range, it is mainly intended as in indoor flyer. However, given the good condition, you can easily fly this quadcopter up to 30m from your transmitter in your backyard or small park or inside your room.
- Cheap Price
- Good flight performance
- Both Controlled and device can easily fit in your pocket
- Non-replaceable battery
- Tiny Motor
Control range: 50 meters
Flight time: 4-5 minutes
Charge Time: 45-50 Minutes
Battery: 500 mAh
The Syma X5SW-V3 is the only FPV (First Person View) on this list. In fact, it is the only FPV available in the market priced under $50 now (earlier it was retailing for around 68 dollars on Amazon). USP (Unique Selling point) of the device is its FPV feature which enables this quadcopter to broadcast videos over WiFi. In simple terms, we can say it does not require a micro SD card to save videos or images, instead it sends live images onto your smartphone which also gets saved there. The user just needs to install a simple app (Syma FPV app) on their mobile. Once the app is installed, you just need to connect the WiFi hotspot of a drone to your mobile to receive the live feed from a quadcopter. Cool, Isn’t it? A very good feature to do the live surveys of properties from the air.
In terms of video quality, we found it to be quite average. It broadcasts 640×480 resolution images from its 0.3MP camera which in our opinion is decent considering the price of this quad. One thing we did not like about the video feed is that it suffers from a lot of lag or latency. Sometimes video takes up to 2-3 seconds before appearing on the phone screen. This means the drone cannot be flown by entirely trusting on FPV, the user needs to keep it within line of sight all the time.
Flight performance is short on this, X5SW can stay in the air for around 4-5 minutes while using the supplied 500mah battery. To increase the flight time you can also purchase an additional bigger (650mAh, 750mAh) battery. To further improve the flight time user can also detach the camera and prop guard when it is not in use.
In our opinion, it is one of the best affordable quadcopters to experience the FPV video flying, albeit with a few flaws that I believe is manageable considering the fact drones with proper FPV feature cost more than 10 times than it.
- Detachable Camera (0.3MP 640X480px)
- Affordable FPV
- Bigger (650mAh, 750mAh) batteries easily available.
- Tall landing legs
- FPV suffers from video lag/Latency
- Short flight time
6) RC Stunt Drone
Flight time: 6 minutes
Charge Time: 60 Minutes
Battery: 300 mAh
In this list of “Best drones under $50”, RC Stunt drone is my second favorite after JJRC H31 because of its outstanding level of design and construction. This drone comes with triple propeller blades which gives better thrust and also save energy as compared to dual propeller blades. In addition to unique three bladed propellers, quad also includes four circular tubes that act as a propeller guard. It provides an extra layer of protection for the blades and also acts as a shock absorber which eventually reduces the risk of damaging the motor.
You can expect around 6 minutes of flight time on a full charge. Charging takes around 60 minutes, which is slow in our opinion, but the good thing is a manufacturer has provided an extra Li-Polymer rechargeable battery in the package. So basically with two fully charged batteries, your flight time would also get doubled (12 minutes).
- Rough and tough design
- Comes with one extra battery
- One touch stunt button
- Requires 6 AA batteries for controller (not included).
- Poor instruction manual.
7) HS 150
Flight time: 5-7 minutes
Charge Time: 90 Minutes
Battery: 600 mAh
HS 150 also known as Bolt bee is the fastest drone in this list. It can reach up to 50km/h (31mph) in a matter of seconds. If you are passionate about drone racing and want to purchase your first racing drone, you can definitely start with this. This Bolt Bee is fast, nimble and has amazing maneuverability.
In addition to amazing speed, HS150 has tons of additional features that can even excite the beginners such as headless mode, 3D flips, and altitude mode. The headless mode allows the drone to move in the same direction you push the controller stick. Altitude mode allows the drone to hold the altitude so that you do not have to worry about the vertical movement you only have to take care of horizontal movement. Hs 150 incorporates 5- speed mode from low to high suitable for both beginners and expert. High-speed mode allows the drone to easily fly in windy (light wind) condition.
HS 150 comes with two high performance 600mAh batteries, when combined they can easily give you 12-14 minute of flight time. We also liked the fact Holy Stone has provided the modular batteries in the package. The biggest advantage of modular batteries is they are, more power efficient as compared to normal batteries thus give better performance.
At this price, you will not get a better racing drone than this. More than 4.5 star Amazon from its verified customer also support this statement. A very well deserving candidate to be featured in any “Best drone under $50” list.
- 50km/h speed
- Headless mode & Altitude mode
- Affordable racing drone
- Limited range
- Bulky controller
8) Drone Flying Cars
Control range: 100-120 meters
Flight time: 4-5 minutes
Charge Time: 40-50 Minutes
Battery: 150 mAh
We have tried to include every unique product in this list of best drones priced under 50 dollars. Drone flying car from “Blu7ive” is another well deserving drone to be featured on this list. The unique selling point of this quad is it steers like a car as well as fly as a quadcopter. So, basically, you are getting both RC Car as well as an RC drone at the same price.
In terms of performance, it can fly in the air for around four to five minutes on a single charge which we think is quite low. The good thing is manufacturer has provided an additional battery in this package. Charging takes around 40 to 50 minutes. Drone performance on the road is also pretty impressive. The car has a sponge tire (glue it to the rims for better performance) for traction and it needs a flat surface to operate due to its low ground clearance. The transition from driving to flying is smooth.
It comes with a variety of features to further enhance your flying experience. Two exceptional features are One key return and 6 axis gyroscope. One key return allows the quad to return to its controller from any position with just a push of a button. 6-axis gyroscope provides additional stability to the drone. You can start the flight by tossing her out in the air rest is taken care by its 6-axis gyroscope.
- It can fly as well as run on tracks
- Additional battery
- Good control range
- Low flight time
- Tires came out of the groove (glue it for better performance)
9) Syma X5C
Control range: 50-60 meters
Flight time: 7 minutes
Charge Time: 90 minutes
Battery: 500 mAh
SYMA has a great reputation in the field of making high-grade RC Drones. In fact, we were so impressed with their performance and build quality, we have included three drones from SYMA in this “Best quad for kids under 50 dollars” list. Unlike its FPV counterpart Syma X5SW-V3 (featured on 5th position), X5C comes with a better 720p HD camera. It also comes with a 4 GB micro SD card for storing videos and images. The camera image quality is not exceptional but decent and there is no stabilization either but considering the price, it will be unfair to complain about anything. Good action camera such as GoPro alone costs more than the price of this quad in the market.
That was about camera performance and pricing of this drone. Let’s talk about flight performance. In the air, X5C is elegant, responsive and fun to fly. 6-axis gyroscope provides the stability in the air and precise hovering even when it is a bit windy outside. For beginners, there is 360° eversion control that allows the drone to roll continuously without losing control. A fun feature that will surely impress your friends.
In terms of specifications, this mini drone comes with a 500mAh battery which can easily give around 7 minutes of airtime. To further increase the flight time you can also detach the propeller guard and camera if not in use. The main drawback to me is that the charge time is 90 minutes.
- HD camera (2MP)
- Micro SD card
- Continuous 360 degree roll
- Wind resistant
- Amazon Bestseller
- Charging time (90min)
10) X20 Mini
Flight time: 5-7 minutes
Charge Time: 50 minutes
Battery: 180 mAh
Last but certainly not the least in the list is Syma X20 also known as Syma X20 Mini Pocket Drone. Now, as you can tell by the name, this is a lightweight drone that can easily fit in your pocket. However, you should be glad to know despite the small size of the drone, it comes with all the advanced features that allow fun and easy flying experience. Features such as Altitude hold mode, Headless mode, One key take off & landing & 6-axis gyroscope adds additional value to the drone.
Syma X20 mini comes with a small 180mAh battery that takes around 50 minutes to charge. The battery of this quad is non-removable, it can be charged with the supplied USB cable. Built-in battery is intended to take the time out to cool down its tiny motors in between flights. So you don’t burn out the tiny motors. The only downside to this is that you can’t bring a few extra batteries with you for the longer flying experience.
Prop guards are very light and minimalistic and at the same time strong enough to give additional protection to the drone. They are also built-in and cannot be removed without opening up the body.
X20 features a beautiful transmitter with beautiful control sticks. It is wide enough to be comfortably held by anyone. Instead of the conventional control stick, Syma has used sliders.
Overall, X20 is a very well designed beautiful quadcopter that is intended as an indoor flyer. For anyone who is looking for his/her first inexpensive drone, this can definitely be a good option.
- Stable flight performance
- Altitude mode and Headless mode
- Inbuilt propeller guards
- Inbuilt battery
Important flying tips for Beginners
Now that you have purchased your drone and you must be excited to fly for the first time. I know that because I was at the same spot you are in now. But before that, here are some tips that can drastically
Improve your flying experience.
- Go through a pre-flight checklist.
Whether you are an experienced pilot or just a novice, a pre-flight checklist can ensure that your drone is safe from sudden failure while flying. Pre-flight checklist includes:-
Check weather battery is fully charged and properly inserted.
Check if all parts are in good condition.
Check if propellers are in good condition and whether or not properly attached to drones.
If it is a camera drone, don’t forget to insert the memory card properly.
Check if camera lens is clear or not? If not, try to clear it with a lens cleaning solution and microfiber cloth.
- Purchase spare parts.
If you are a beginner and learning to fly the drone, it’s a good idea to purchase some additional propellers and prop guard. Crashing the drone while learning is inevitable and the first thing that takes the hit are its propeller guards. The best thing about these kids drones is their replacement parts are very cheap ($4 max.) and easily available on Amazon.
- Buy additional batteries.
Most toy grade drones come with a tiny battery. You can expect a short battery life anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes max. Also charging time is also higher on these drones. Some batteries take around 60-80 minutes to fully charge. That is the reason why we always suggest buying a bunch of additional batteries to limit your downtime.
- Don’t go too fast
These drones come with an ultra responsive, powerful motors. Take proper caution in using the throttle stick. Don’t go too fast first. Adjust the throttle slowly to maintain control. When you get comfortable in slow/beginner mode, then moving to pro mode.
- Take break between flights
As I have already mentioned these mini drones come with tiny motors. Continuous flying can result in motor and circuit board to overheat. It’s a good practice to give 5-10 minutes cool-down break to your quad to ensure your parts last as long as possible.
This concludes our list of “the best drones for kids under $50”. As you can see, there are lots of good options you can choose. From racing drones to stunt drones to camera drones, the sky is unlimited. Now, it’s up to you to decide which type of drone you are more interested in. We tried to give an honest review of each one of them and sincerely hope that it helped you with your decision.
Did we miss something? Or, Do you own a drone that deserves to feature on this list? Do let us know in the comment section below? We would love to hear that!!!
